Article and photos by Ian Darragh - On your next stay at William’s Landing, check out the four new kayaks that have been added to our fleet of watercraft. The florescent, yellow and green kayaks were designed and manufactured in Picton, Ontario, by ClearWater Design, a Canadian company founded in 1995. We have purchased four of their Inuvik models.
They are very stable kayaks specifically designed for family, recreational paddling. They have large cockpits to make getting into and out of the kayak as easy as possible. These single kayaks are rated for a maximum load of 350 pounds, so you can take a small child, grandchild, or dog in the kayak with you.
The kayaks have adjustable, padded seats with a hand-pump for inflating the back of the seat for extra lumbar support.
All of ClearWater Design’s watercraft have distinctive Canadian names. This model of kayak is named after a town in the Mackenzie Delta of the Northwest Territories and pays homage to the inventors of the kayak, the Inuit.
When you are finished using your Inuvik kayak, please loosen the black knob used to adjust the height of the seat’s backrest; raise the backrest as high as possible, and then fold the backrest forward so it lies flat on the bottom of the kayak. Folding the seat will protect the backrest from getting twisted or breaking when the kayak is stored upside down.
We’ve also purchased new life vests, and kayak and canoe paddles.
Here’s a video of Michelle Laframboise, co-owner ClearWater Design, describing the Inuvik kayak:
Also new this year are four Inukshuk stand-up paddleboards, also manufactured by ClearWater Design.
